The Touch Cover is an incredibly useful and capable accessory that feels as essential to the Surface experience as the kickstand, but given the choice, I'd recommend most buyers spring for the $130 Type Cover keyboard instead.

Reviews Word on the street for the Microsoft Surface RT

8.0
In general, high quality images abound as do rich typographic elements that set Windows 8 and Surface apart from the hit or miss presentation of Android and iOS tablets (and I love my Android tablets and greatly respect iPad apps for their quality).

7.0
My overall impression of IE10's browser speed was that it was sometimes fast enough, but I usually felt like I was waiting around longer than I would have liked to.

8.5
Currently, the Microsoft Surface is being made in 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi Wi-Fi form on.

6.0
Pinch-and-zoom was fast and responsive, fonts rendered quickly, and sites filled the 16:9 screen to offer an excellent experience.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Operating System

Sadly, the digital pen is MIA in many of the first crop of Windows 8 tablets, likely to bring the cost down since dual digitizers cost more money.
by MobileTechReview (Oct, 2012)
Windows 8 and Windows 7 are essentially identical, except that the Start menu has been axed in favour of a Start screen, a giant colourfully-tiled HTML 5 overlay, through which everything must be run.
by TechRadar (Sep, 2013)
To clarify, Windows RT is a new MicrosoftOS for tablets, that’ll be running on ARM-based devices, which are aimed to compete in the same price category as the iPad and 10-inch Android tablets.
by PhoneArena (Oct, 2012)

Operating system

Microsoft is taking a big leap with Windows 8 and its dualistic UI that has both Live Tiles in the Modern UI (formerly called Metro) and the traditional, though updated, Windows 7 standard desktop UI.
by MobileTechReview (Oct, 2012)
Find out: Windows 8 vs Windows RT: what's the difference?
by TechRadar (Sep, 2013)
And that's the plus as well as the caveat: you get the same UI, Windows desktop and largely the same MS Office suite as you do on Windows 8 Pro machines, but you can't run.
by MobileTechReview (Oct, 2012)

Apps

I was impressed by Xbox Music's vast library and the speed at which it skipped to the next track while streaming songs.
by c|net (Oct, 2012)
A clearer distinction between games from the Windows Store and Xbox games would be nice.
by c|net (Oct, 2012)
No additional apps can be added to the Desktop interface, however.
by c|net (Oct, 2012)

Screen

At the same time, we love the dynamic look of the player as it’s playing a track, seeing that images of the respective artist are displayed on-screen and a short bio is accessible as well.
by PhoneArena (Oct, 2012)
By default, Microsoft has made it so that the Surface is primarily held in landscape, and with that in mind, there’s a capacitive Start button below the screen, which merely brings us back to the Start Screen.
by PhoneArena (Oct, 2012)
Another triumph is the on-screen keyboard, which is large, sensitive and easy to use.
by TechRadar (Sep, 2013)

Touch

Touch Cover: If you haven’t noticed it already in the Microsoft Surface commercials, the secondary star attraction of the Surface is the optional Touch Cover, which retails for $120 when bought separately and is available in different colors.
by PhoneArena (Oct, 2012)
It works well, is snappy and responsive, but the experience is woeful on a touchscreen device, with tiny areas making navigation painful.
by TechRadar (Sep, 2013)
After several days of use, it's clear to me that owning the Touch Cover (or Type Cover; see below) is essential to getting the complete Surface experience.
