Reviews Word on the street for the Apple iPad iPad mini

The really impressive feat of the iPad Mini, the surprise, is that it seems to handle all the iPad's normal duties while being shrunken down.

It lacked not just a front-facing camera for FaceTime, but any camera at all, couldn't handle multitasking and for all that its display offered a great portal to the Internet and a plethora of apps, the Apple iPad was actually a somewhat unwieldy device to sit in bed or on the sofa with.

But regardless of market positioning, the iPad mini has to be viewed in a world with a $199 Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD — two strong performers that are a far cry, at least in price, from the iPad mini.

The basic schtick is the same - magnetic attachment, rolling up to provide a stand for viewing and for typing - but the much-balyhooed new hinge design is less rigid and so less good.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

The resolution is low enough, though, that text on websites looks pretty pixelated at times, making it harder to read than we'd like - our eyes have been spoiled by too many super-sharp displays on all the great smartphones now available.

Other tablets we've had brief looks at also have great displays but the iPad 2 is leading the pack so far.
by TrustedReviews (Apr, 2012)
After all, the iPad/2 has a big screen to play with and having just a huge expanse of icons greeting you on the home page does feel like a less than optimal use of this space.
by TrustedReviews (Apr, 2012)

One sticking point in the original iPad that Apple hasn't addressed in the iPad 2 is Adobe Flash support for Apple's Safari Web browser.

We've seen less good-looking PS3 and Xbox 360 games.
by TrustedReviews (Apr, 2012)
Any tablet can offer a fun experience right out of the box, but it takes a steady stream of interesting, affordable apps and games to keep people glued over the long haul.

Operating System

The wide range of possible hardware configurations for Android really hurts it here - the Apple iOS ecosystem has its faults, but fragmentation isn't one of them.
by TrustedReviews (Apr, 2012)
We appreciate there's a certain charm to this basic layout, and that the similarity to the iPhone has its charm, but the likes of WebOS and Android have shown that there is room for improvement.
by TrustedReviews (Apr, 2012)
Yes, iOS 6 isn't world-changing (aside from Maps, which makes some decidedly dodgy changes to the world), but it's not bad.
by TrustedReviews (Nov, 2012)

Operating system

You couldn't bounce between applications with multitasking.
by c|net (Mar, 2011)
Unlike the Tab, in their own ways the BlackBerry PlayBook and Motorola Xoom offer a genuine alternative to the Apple iPad; they have well-designed and well-made chassis, slick operating systems, and are fairly price-competitive.
by TrustedReviews (Apr, 2012)
With the iPad 2, the system is a little tighter and response is more immediate, but the real-world benefits come in the form of app load times and when switching between apps using the multitasking bar.
by c|net (Mar, 2011)

There's no camera flash, however, and the camera sensor is a far cry from the one used in the iPhone 4.
by c|net (Mar, 2011)
In fact, its color tone and low light performance was better than what I've seen on many newer smartphones.
by The Verge (Oct, 2012)
Even if Apple had gone the route of using a Carl Zeiss lens and a 10-megapixel sensor, the iPad 2 just isn't a replacement for a camera or smartphone.
