In terms of basic hardware, the iPad isn't overly impressive, although the 1,024 x 768, 9.7-inch diagonal screen is absolutely gorgeous.

Reviews Word on the street for the Apple iPad 1

The iPad's Bluetooth capabilities also allow peer-to-peer networking for gaming and wireless keyboard support for compatible writing applications.

When held in two hands it might be an inch or so too large to type really quickly, but set it down in landscape mode you can type accurately and at reasonable speed.

Simple games like Angry Birds HD (£2.99) and Plants vs Zombies HD (£5.99) can prove better though, but Apple is truly becoming a serious player in terms of gaming.

What People Are Saying Give it to me straight

Network technology

While the benefits of 3G connectivity are obvious, it's not all smooth sailing for the iPad 3G.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
The other big boon of the iPad 3G is that you get GPS capabilities, so you'll get a better experience in, say, Google Maps and geo-tagged tweets, for example.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
Yep, so that's available on the iPhone, and whether you need this 3G variant really depends on if you think you'll need the 3G capability when you're out and about.

iTunes HD video looks superb, while watching YouTube videos are also an impressive experience.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
Of course, there are a great many magazine apps being launched, but books is where Apple is concentrating.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
The Apple A4 chip certainly seems to cope quite well with the graphical demands of the device and apps load quickly, too.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)

It's expensive – and through monthly costs far, far more so than the iPad Wi-Fi.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
The iPad will always try to connect to a Wi-Fi connection if one is available anyway, so you'll only use your data connection where absolutely necessary.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
My Wi-Fi review model came in black (64GB); the iPad also comes in white.

The A6X speeds up the iPad back to levels you'd expect, and it handles Retina Display graphics even better.
by c|net (Oct, 2012)
The Retina Display also remains the same, and it's still as lovely as ever.
by c|net (Oct, 2012)
It's LED by design, meaning it's extremely bright and the colours exceptionally vivid.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)

The 13.4 mm thickness does make the device feel extremely slim, but it remains fairly weighty.
by TechRadar (May, 2010)
The 1.4-pound body doesn't feel lightweight, but it's comfortable to hold in two hands.
by c|net (Oct, 2012)
The thicker bezel of the iPad is necessary at this size and weight; it helps keep a grip on the otherwise ultra-sleek body.
